The Prime Minister will hold an emergency Cabinet meeting on Monday to discuss soaring Covid cases and possible new restrictions.
Boris Johnson will meet with ministers at 2pm amid concerns about the accelerating spread of the Omicron variant and hospitalisations continuing to rise in the capital in the lead up to Christmas.
Plans reportedly under consideration include tightening restrictions on socialising indoors, the return of social distancing and a curfew for hospitality businesses.
The Prime Minister's official spokesman declined to comment on what potential restrictions would be discussed.
He said: "I appreciate there's a great deal of speculation over the weekend, and indeed today, about what, if any, further measures may be required.
"At this point we are still monitoring the data and keeping a very close eye on it."
The public will be an updated if any further decisions are taken, he said.
He added: "We will take any necessary steps in the interest of protecting lives and livelihoods...You have seen we've in the past introduced some things in guidance in the past and some things in regulation.
"We've got the position as set out through Plan B and we're keeping that under review."
It comes as almost half of London boroughs saw Covid cases more than double in a week, according to Government data.
At least 10 cabinet ministers are said to be resisting calls by scientific advisers for new restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is reportedly among the group questioning the accuracy of official modelling, which suggests without action there could be 3,000 patients a day needing a hospital bed in the UK.
Health secretary Sajid Javid has refused to rule out a “circuit breaker” lockdown that would ban household mixing in the coming weeks.
