Boris Johnson to give UK Covid update at 8pm as Omicron variant surges

Boris Johnson is set to give a live update to the nation at 8:00pm this evening with the Covid alert level understood to be at risk of being raised from Level 3 to Level 4.

The Prime Minister is also understood to be giving an update on Omicron booster jabs and it is also believed that there will be no further restrictions introduced at this time.

The move comes on the back of a severe increase in Omicron variant cases being recorded across the UK

This follows on from a recommendation made by four chief medical officers and NHS England’s national medical director who have recommended the rise in Level’s.

The UK Health Security Agency has said that there are 1,239 confirmed cases of the Omicron strain in the UK as of Sunday, according to STV news.

This means that the total number of Omicron cases within the UK is at 3,137 - an increase of around 65% from the 1,898 total that was recorded on Saturday.

The Scottish government on Sunday revealed that there were 159 cases of the new strain across the nation - which means the number had more than tripled from last week.

The Scottish first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, had stated that the booster programme will be extended to 30-39-year-olds in Scotland from the start of next week.

Johnson is understood to be focusing on the booster roll out in England as well as the rise in Levels.
