Boris Johnson to give live TV update on coronavirus and Christmas

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to address the nation in a live TV update on coronavirus from Downing Street.

Mr Johnson is likely to set out the actual rules for Christmas after days of discussion between the four nations of the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday afternoon alongside England’s chief medical officer professor Chris Whitty, No 10 has said.

And he may reveal changes to the tier system after the latest tiers for England were agreed by the Government on Wednesday.

Speaking in parliament on Wednesday morning Mr Johnnson said the relaxation of coronavirus rules over Christmas would go ahead.

But the leaders of Wales and Scotland have said they will change guidance - reducing the number of people who can meet or the number of days.

Wales has announced a three week national lockdown starting on Christmas Day.

Scots should stay in their own homes at Christmas, Nicola Sturgeon has urged.

If people feel it is “essential” to meet with others indoors, she said this should be for one day only and not overnight.

Mr Johnson said there will be tougher guidance.

The announcement is expected at 3.30pm
