Boris Johnson to give live press conference today from Glasgow

Boris Johnson is to hold a press conference at 5pm at the Cop26 summit in Glasgow, Downing Street has said.

Mr Johnson will update the nation on what has so far been agreed at the international summit on climate change.

Today US President Joe Biden hailed the commitment from “approaching 100” countries who have pledged to cut their methane emissions by 30% by 2030.

Speaking at the Cop26 UN climate change summit in Glasgow, he thanked those who have signed the “game-changing commitment” led by the US and EU.

“One of the most important things we can do in this decisive decade to keep 1.5 degrees is reduce our methane emissions as quickly as possible,” he said.

“It’s one of the most potent greenhouse gases there is. It amounts to about half the warming we are experiencing today.”

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos told the Cop26 global climate summit in Glasgow that his flight to space in July had changed his view of the world.

He said: “I was told that seeing the Earth from space changes the lens from which you view the world.

“But I was not prepared for just how much that would be true.

“Looking back at Earth from up there, the atmosphere seems so thin, the world so finite and so fragile.

“Now, in this critical year and what we all know is the decisive decade, we must all stand together to protect our world.”

Bezos has pledged 2 billion dollars (£1.47 billion) for land restoration in Africa.

The billionaire announced the funding, paid as part of the Bezos Earth Fund, at a Cop26 event with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said the “important breakthrough” of world leaders signing an agreement to protect forests seems to “bode well” for the rest of Cop26.

He told Sky News: “This is an important breakthrough, had you spoken to me five days ago I also would’ve been apprehensive about whether we would’ve landed this agreement on forests but we have and it’s looking really encouraging. This is a big breakthrough.”

Mr Eustice welcomed India’s net zero target as a “big step forward” even though “the have got more to do to get there”.
