Boris Johnson to give coronavirus press conference with Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance

Boris Johnson will hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to update the public on the coronavirus pandemic.

The Prime Minister will be joined by England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, Downing Street said.

It will be a little over a week since Mr Johnson last addressed the nation and a week on from Professor Whitty and Sir Patrick's own joint message to the public.

It will also be the first time in weeks that the trio have appeared at a conference together after the government's daily press conference's were scrapped on June 23.

On tomorrow's speech, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "The purpose of that is to provide an update on the latest statistics.

"It is not because there is some specific set of new announcements to make."

A specific time hasn't yet been given, however, Prime Minister's questions usually takes place in the House of Commons at around 12pm. So any press conference is likely to take place later in the afternoon.

Last week, Mr Johnson announced a raft of new measures as coronavirus cases in the UK surpassed 6,000.

A curfew on hospitality venues was introduced meaning pubs, bars, restaurants and other leisure venues must close at 10pm and cannot reopen until 5am at the earliest. They must also operate as table service only unless they have a takeaway function.

It also comes as areas of England, including Newcastle, were given even tighter coronavirus restrictions which will come into force tomorrow.

It was announced on Monday that from midnight tonight, it will be illegal to meet with other households in the North East.
