Boris Johnson to give coronavirus press conference at 5pm tonight

Boris Johnson is to give a coronavirus press conference at 5pm tonight, the government has announced.

The Prime Minister will appear alongside Chief Medical Officer for England Chris Whitty and NHS England chief executive Sir Simon Stevens.

The Prime Minister is expected to talk about the UK death toll.

As of yesterday 98,531 people had died within 28 days of a positive test, meaning the official total was in danger of tipping over 100,000 today.

He is not expected to make a new policy announcement.

Downing Street intends to give three press conferences per week during the current lockdown, down from seven a week last Spring.

Usually they are confirmed publicly before noon but today an announcement was made just before 2pm.

It also comes amid frenzied talks about vaccines and the UK border.

The EU last night threatened to restrict exports of the Pfizer vaccine from Belgium to the UK after its deliveries of the parallel AstraZeneca jab were cut.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson is expected tonight to agree plans to force some or all travellers into the UK to quarantine in hotels.

But it is unlikely to be agreed before tonight's press conference. The crunch Covid-O meeting to agree border measures was, earlier, only scheduled for 6pm.
