Boris Johnson to fly to Berlin for Libya talks with world leaders

BORIS Johnson flies to Berlin on Sunday for talks with Angela Merkel aimed at ending the bloodshed in Libya.

The north African country has descended into fresh chaos since the revolution which toppled dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

German Chancellor Mrs Merkel has invited world leaders to Berlin so they can try and thrash out a plan to tackle the renewed violence.

The Prime Minster’s spokesman said: “The conflict in Libya has escalated in recent months and threatens to destabilise the wider region.

“This meeting is an opportunity for the UK to come together with international partners and countries in the region to support efforts towards a ceasefire and encourage a return to United Nations-led talks.”

Libya is the only item on the agenda for the mini-summit - meaning there are no talks planned on a post-Brexit trade deal.

The spokesman added: “It is right that the UK supports any chance of a ceasefire to end the fighting in the country.”
