Boris Johnson to announce 'air bridges' on June 29 with low coronavirus rate countries

Boris Johnson will announce a string of deals with a "small number" of countries to create air bridges later this month, it has been claimed.

The Prime Minister will reveal which countries - all said to have low coronavirus infection rates - are included in the deal, in a boost to Brits hoping to enjoy summer holidays abroad following months of lockdown.

Ministers want to set up air bridges to nations seen as "most advantageous" to the UK economy - like France, Spain, Greece and Portugal, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Travellers arriving in the UK face 14 days of isolation under mandatory quarantine - with fines threatened for anyone who flouts the rules.

But Mr Johnson has previously said that the government is looking at the idea of "air bridges."

These would allow Brits to dodge quarantine when arriving back home after travelling, as well as any isolation requirements in the selected country abroad.

An insider told The Telegraph: “The plan is to announce a small number of air bridges on June 29, though it won’t come into force until July 4.

“Obviously it will depend on factors such as the scientific advice and the level of coronavirus infections at the time.

"The Foreign Office will also have to change its travel advice before then because that remains a block on people going abroad for holidays.”

At the moment the Foreign Office is advising against all but essential travel - meaning Brits who want to go abroad are finding it hard to get travel insurance.

On Tuesday, the PM said: “The reason for having the quarantine system is very simple: we don’t want to reimport the disease just at the moment when we’ve really got it under control in this country.

“But we’re certainly looking at air bridges and ways to ensure that people can safely go on holiday eventually.”

Today he welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to the UK for talks, and said air bridges would be among the topics for discussion.

He said before Mr Macron's visit: "Obviously I will be talking to Emmanuel Macron about all sorts of ways in which we can bring our countries together, making sure that eventually we will be able to travel freely to and from each other's countries.

"The same goes obviously for Spain, as soon as we can.
