Boris Johnson 'spent £840 a roll on wallpaper' as SNP accuse PM of living like French king

Boris Johnson has been “living it up like a modern day Louis the Sixteenth” and must come clean about allegations of dodgy donors paying for the “luxury refurbishment” of his Downing Street flat, the SNP has claimed.

The nationalists drew comparisons between the Tory Prime Minister and the last king of France who was executed by guillotine during the French revolution as the SNP listed the purchases reported to have been paid for by the Tory party in a £58,000 donation for the refurbishment.

SNP Westminster Deputy Leader Kirsten Oswald MP called for a public inquiry into Tory sleaze, and said Johnson was “out of touch”, with families struggling to get by.

She said: “Serious allegations have been made of impropriety and potential illegality, which could see the police involved and result in prosecution if the rules have been broken."

“The Prime Minister must publish the full details, including how much was spent, how it was paid for, who paid for it, including full details of any money paid into his personal bank account, whether it was properly declared and whether it complies with the rules.”

Oswald added: “The revelation that the refurbishment was partly paid for by the Tory Party raises further serious questions. Political parties do not exist to pay for home decor, and it is highly unlikely that this is a legitimate use of people’s donations.

“This Tory government couldn’t be more out of touch with millions of people across the UK. While many families have been struggling to get by due to Tory cuts and gaps in support, Boris Johnson has been living it up like a modern day Louis the Sixteenth. It absolutely stinks.”

The lavish makeover of the Downing Street flat is reported to include:

  • Wallpaper at £840 a roll
  • A Baby Bear sofa at £9,800
  • A Lilly Drum table at £3,000
  • An armchair at £5,900

Johnson is on the ropes over a number leaks leading to controversies ranging from lobbying by businessman James Dyson to allegedly saying that he would rather “bodies piled up” rather than impose another lockdown.

Johnson faced fresh claims over his crass comments on Tuesday after allegedly telling aides he would rather let Covid “rip” than impose a second lockdown.

The Prime Minister said lockdowns were “mad” in September, just as cases began ticking upwards, and voiced fears about the economic harm they would do, it is reported.

Downing Street has denied the comments after he flatly denied another claim only for the BBC and ITV to quote multiple sources saying it was true.

The PM insisted on Monday that he did not say “no more ****ing lockdowns - let the bodies pile high in their thousands!” after realising he would have to lock England down for a second time in late October.

He even expressed regret about imposing the first lockdown in March, according to The Times.
