Boris Johnson sets out reasons you can leave your house in second lockdown

Boris Johnson has announced a second national lockdown for England, as coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country.

The three-tiered system of local lockdowns announced by the Prime Minister in an effort to tackle the spread has only been in place for 19 days, with Liverpool and surrounding areas the first place to adopt them, but it is thought tougher action has been deemed necessary.

The restrictions will be similar to those introduced at the start of the pandemic in March. However, this time schools and universities will remain open, among other changes.

It comes after a senior Government scientific adviser said it is "definitely too late to think that the two-week circuit-breaker on its own will sort this out".

"It would bring it down a bit but it wouldn't be enough to bring (the R value) right down. A two-week circuit-breaker would have an effect but now almost certainly it would need to go on for longer to have a significant effect."
