Boris Johnson sets date for potential General Election in 2019

Boris Johnson has declared he will launch a fresh bid to hold a general election on Thursday December 12 in his bid to "get Brexit done".

The Prime Minister has seen his attempts to get his Brexit deal through Parliament and honour his promise to leave the UK by October 31 thwarted again and now believes a General Election is the only way to break the Brexit deadlock.

He will formally push for MPs to back the plan in the House of Commons on Monday - but will need the support of two-thirds of them.

Speaking after a meeting of senior cabinet ministers on Thursday, Mr Johnson vowed to act on MPs' concern he had given them too little time to scrutinise the EU Withdrawal Bill, which writes into UK law the deal he secured with Brussels.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn acknowledges supporters after he delivered a speech at the Grand Central Hall in Liverpool (PA)

He said: "We are going to give them all the time they want, between now and the dissolution of parliament to do scrutiny."

"We have had three years, we have been reasonable, if you want more time you can have it but we must all agree to go for an election on 12 December."

He added: "It's time, frankly, for the opposition to summon the nerve to the sumbit themselves to the judgement of our collective boss, the people."

All eyes will now be on the Labour Party and Jeremy Corbyn to see if they back the plan to hold a new vote.
