Boris Johnson set to announce on Monday if lockdown will be lifted early

The Prime Minister will confirm next week whether lockdown restrictions can be lifted early on July 5, according to reports.

The reports say Boris Johnson is considering lifting restrictions two weeks earlier than planned as hospital admissions stabilise.

An announcement on the issue will take place on Monday (June 28).

The Government pushed back so-called 'Freedom Day' by four weeks, shifting the unlocking date from June 21 to July 19.

But Birmingham Live reports the Government could lift restrictions and measures a fortnight earlier than this date, if the data allows.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister said: "Monday will be the day when we were deciding on the decision on that and we are closely monitoring the data, ahead of providing a full update.

"We will set out very clearly to the public, the rationale for the decision we've made."

The Prime Minister "re-emphasised the Government's determination to ensure the roadmap is irreversible" during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Downing Street has said.

A readout after the meeting said: "Cabinet concluded with a discussion on our ongoing response to Covid-19.

"The Prime Minister re-emphasised the Government's determination to ensure the road map is irreversible and said he was constantly reviewing the data on cases, hospitalisations and deaths ahead of a decision on step four."

Step four of the lockdown roadmap will see restrictions on weddings and funerals axed, as well as the rule of six, which will finally be lifted.

There would also be no more limits on the nightclub industry from that date, and while face masks are expected to last a little while longer, it is hoped major events can once again take place.
