Boris Johnson says vaccinated have 'real opportunity' to travel this summer

Boris Johnson suggested that fully vaccinated people might be able to travel abroad this summer as he spoke to reporters today.

The Prime Minister said there was a "real opportunity to open up travel " this summer for those who have two doses of the coronavirus jab.

Asked about Angela Merkel saying the Delta variant meant there should be more restrictions on British travellers going abroad, the Prime Minister said: "I think that the real opportunity we all have now is to open up travel through the double jab.

"If you look at it we've got more than 60% of our population have now had two jabs, I think 83% have had one jab, we're really getting through it now.

"The crucial thing is come forward and get your second jab."

But Mr Johnson did warn that travel wouldn't be back to normal this summer, even if people were allowed to travel.

He said: "I'm not going to claim that this summer, for travel purposes, is going to be like any other summer. I don't want to cast a pall over things but, as I said the other day, it will be different."

Asked whether he would be taking a holiday abroad this summer, Boris Johnson said: "My plans at this stage are at the unformed stage, I'm afraid.

"I'm certainly not ruling it in or ruling it out."

Mr Johnson's comments come as the government reviews the traffic light system for travel, with some nations with low coronavirus case rates rumoured to be put on the green list.

Malta and the Balearic Islands, with its popular destinations of Mallorca and Ibiza, are among a "handful" of places being considered for addition to the green list, according to the Times.

Malta and Spain are currently on the Government's amber list, alongside other popular summer hotspots such as Portugal, Italy and Greece, with a 10-day quarantine period at home required for people returning from those locations.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said earlier this week that the Government is "working on" plans to allow quarantine-free travel for fully vaccinated Britons returning from amber locations.
