Boris Johnson's Plan B decision could have huge impact on Leeds United and rivals

The UK Government is reportedly planning to introduce stricter measures aimed at tackling Covid which would impact football clubs such as Leeds United.

Sky News reported today that 'senior government sources' had told them Prime Minister Boris Johnson is 'minded to move to Plan B as early as this week' due to the arrival of the Omicron variant.

According to the Government's autumn and winter plan, which was updated last month, that meant that 'mandatory vaccine-only certification would be introduced for visitors' to a range of settings.

One of those was: "Any settings with 10,000 or more attendees, such as large sports and music stadia."

This would mean fans of Leeds and supporters of clubs across the country would all be required to produce vaccine passports to attend matches.

According to the Government's autumn and winter plan, the NHS COVID Pass will also probably be changed under Plan B, with testing and natural immunity no longer being displayed.

The plan says: "If Plan B is implemented, at that point the NHS COVID Pass will change to display full vaccination only. Exemptions will continue to apply for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, for those on COVID vaccine clinical trials, and for under 18s.”

There are currently no restrictions on supporters attending football matches with no spot checks for vaccine statuses or lateral flow tests.

The plan also added that notice will hopefully be given to organisations to prepare: “The Government would seek to give businesses at least one week’s notice before mandatory vaccine certification came into force."

That means it could be in place for the match at Elland Road against Arsenal on Saturday, December 18.
