Boris Johnson's own words haunt him as he chickens out of holding an election

Boris Johnson's own words on holding a general election have come back to haunt him.

Mr Johnson, who steamed ahead of his rivals in the Tory leadership contest this afternoon, was asked if he'd commit to holding an election when he became PM.

But the front runner chickened out of committing to holding a general election.

He answered: "No one in Parliament wants a general election."

It was then that Emily Maitlis, who was hosting the BBC debate, reminded him of what he said when Gordon Brown became PM without an election in 2010.

Mr Johnson wrote previously: “‘It’s the arrogance. It’s the contempt.

"That’s what gets me.

“It’s Gordon Brown’s apparent belief that he can just trample on the democratic will of the British people.

“It’s at moments like this that I think the political world has gone mad, and I am alone in detecting the gigantic fraud.”

A bumbling Mr Johnson replied: "He wasn't taking over in the context of a national political crisis where we need to get Brexit done."

The other candidates also backed Mr Johnson's calls not to hold an election.

It isn't the first time Mr Johnson has been yellow bellied.

In this election he has spent much of his time too chicken to answer questions from journalists.

Either refusing to appear on debates or at hustings or simply refusing to appear on flagship broadcasts.

But don't worry - we've got a feathered friend who'll keep trying to get him on the record.

Bok. bok.
