Boris Johnson's fiancee Carrie Symonds calls for live animal meat markets to be banned to prevent another Covid-19-like pandemic

Carrie Symonds has signed a petition calling for a worldwide ban on live animal meat markets after coronavirus is thought to have emerged at a "wet market" in Wuhan, China.

The Prime Minister's fiancee, who is expecting their first child together early this summer, backed a call for governments around the world to take action to end the trade in wild animals for consumption.

Taking to Twitter she said the Covid-19 outbreak was “a chance to start doing things better”.

Her husband-to-be, Boris Johnson, was admitted to intensive care with the strain but is now recovering out of hospital.

A market in the epicentre of the outbreak in Central China’s Hubei province is said to be where the virus made the jump from animals to possibly bats and then humans.

The End the Trade petition, signed by Ms Symonds, urges governments to learn from coronavirus and put measures in place to stop it happening again.

“Together we are urging the world’s governments to recognise that this is among the most important decisions that the global community can make to prevent future pandemics and global disruption,” it said.

“This crisis gives us the chance to start doing things better. Let this be one of those things.”

Ms Symonds was previously forced to self-isolate after she came down with coronavirus symptoms.

She is currently with Mr Johnson at Chequers, his official country residence, where the Prime Minister is continuing to recuperate after being admitted to hospital with the disease.
