Boris Johnson's dad Stanley says how proud he is of his son, then brings up Hitler

Stanley Johnson hasn't been far away from controversy if the last 12 hours are anything to go by.

Not content with causing outrage with Channel 4 viewers last night by suggesting that female pilots should not wear a burqa, today he decided to name drop Adolf Hitler.

The father of Boris Johnson was speaking as part of the panel for the ITV show’s general election special following the Conservative Party’s landslide victory when he thought it would be a good idea to mention the Nazi dictator.

Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain, Stanley - who appeared in I’m A Celebrity in 2017 - began by claiming he’d “missed” Boris famously hiding in a fridge earlier this week when ambushed by a GMB reporter.

Awkward laughs came from the panel before host Susanna Reid pointed out it was an “unnecessary reference” (ITV)

But he became more animated when asked how proud he is of his prime minister son.

The 79-year-old gushed: “Can you imagine a father who would not be proud if his son became prime minister? What kind of a guy would he be?

“Of course if his son was called Adolf, that would be different."

Piers, trying to make light of the awkward moment, said: “Stanley do think the more you talk on these things there’s always a potential for disaster?”

As the conversation was deftly turned around, viewers of the ITV show took to Twitter to air their shock.

He, oddly, added: “Of course if his son was called Adolf, that would be different" (ITV)

One raged: "What father wouldn't be proud of their child being Prime Minister. Well maybe not if their son was called Adolf - wtf Stanley Johnson?? Why is this man allowed on TV?”

A second said: “#isitok that Stanley Johnson is allowed to speak in public?”

A third agreed: “Why is Stanley Johnson given air time?”

Others were still angry about his comments on Channel 4’s alternative general election programme, with some branding his burqa comments “racist”.

Pointing out a flaw with Johnson senior's comments, one posted a photo of a fighter pilot complete with helmet and breathing mask, with the caption: "God forbid a female fighter jet pilot wears a burka which I assume Stanley Johnson disagrees with because you can't see their face..."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
