Boris Johnson's dad said he 'broke lockdown' to find news of his new grandson

Boris Johnson's father has revealed he only learned of his new grandson's name by "breaking lockdown" to buy a newspaper.

The Prime Minister and his partner Carrie Symonds announced the safe arrival of their baby boy last week.

The couple have named their son Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson, in a tribute to their grandfathers and the doctors who helped save the Prime Minister's life.

Wilfred was the name of Boris Johnson's grandfather.

Boris' father Stanley Johnson appeared via video link on Good Morning Britain to share how he learned of the news.

The 79-year-old revealed he ventured out to buy a newspaper to learn of his grandson's name - and that's how he discovered it was a tribute to his own father.

He said: "I actually broke the lockdown rule, I've got to say... I went and I said, 'there's bound to be something in the papers' so I went to... the garage... I took the back way, by the way... and I said, 'look I know I'm not really meant to be out buying a newspaper, I'm not sure if it's an essential journey but I just think there's something in the paper today about my fourteenth grandchild'."

Stanley also spoke of his fears while the Prime Minister was battling coronavirus.

He said: "Well I think I was as worried as any father would be if their child is at death's door.

"I was certainly worried, I've got to tell you, I make no bones about it, I said a prayer or two. So there you go."

Stanley's father Wilfred was a war hero who sustained major burns in an aircraft crash during World War Two.
