Boris Johnson's condition 'improving' as he continues coronavirus battle in intensive care

Boris Johnson’s condition is reportedly ‘improving’ as he spends his second day in intensive care.

The Prime Minister was taken into an ICU unit at St Thomas’ Hospital on Monday evening after his coronavirus symptoms had worsened.

News of his deteriorating ill health came more than a week after the 55-year-old began experiencing ‘mild symptoms’ of Covid-19.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said that the Prime Minister is now sitting up in his bed as his condition continues to improve.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said Boris Johnson's condition is 'improving' during a press conference today (PA)

During a daily coronavirus briefing on Wednesday, he said: “The latest from the hospital is that the Prime Minister remains in intensive care where his condition is improving. I can also tell you that he has been sitting up in bed and been engaging positively with the clinical team.”

Johnson remains in a stable condition at the London hospital as he continues battle against the deadly virus.

Health Minister Edward Argar wished him and his pregnant partner Carrie Symonds “all the best”, earlier today.

Mr Argar told Sky News: "I understand the Prime Minister is in a stable condition, he's comfortable and in good spirits. He has in the past had some oxygen, but he's not on ventilation.

"And like Dominic Raab, the First Secretary of State, and everyone else in the government, and indeed the message I'm getting from people around the country, we all wish him a very full and speedy recovery.

"He's not only our Prime Minister but as Dom said, for us he's a colleague and a friend.”

Reports today suggested the PM's temperature had fallen after more than a week of fever caused by Covid-19.

Downing Street yesterday said he had not been diagnosed with pneumonia and had not required "non-invasive" breathing support.

His deputy Dominic Raab, who has taken charge of the government in his absence, said last night: “I’m confident that he’ll pull through because if there’s one thing I know, he’s a fighter.

"He'll be back at the helm leading us through this crisis in short order."
