UK set for pre-Christmas General Election on December 12

The UK is poised for a general election on December 12 after MPs finally agreed to Boris Johnson’s bid for a snap poll.

MPs voted for a pre-Christmas election by 428 votes to 20 on Tuesday night, after previously voting against the Prime Minister’s call three times.

The bill will then go through the House of Lords, which is expected to approve it.

If the bill goes through the Lords, Parliament is expected to dissolve on Wednesday, November 6 to provide the 25 days needed to hold a general election campaign.

Earlier in the day Mr Johnson's call for a general election went through at second reading in the Commons without a vote, after MPs voiced their verbal support.

The government also won the battle for the date of the election, which ministers had set for 12 December but Labour wanted to hold on 9 December.

The government won the amendment after 315 MPs voted against it and 295 for it.

After the vote Jeremy Corbyn said: "This election is a once-in-a-generation chance to transform our country and take on the vested interests holding people back.

"The choice at this election could not be clearer. A Labour government will be on your side, while Boris Johnson’s Conservatives – who think they’re born to rule – will only look after the privileged few.

"We will now launch the most ambitious and radical campaign for real change that our country has ever seen. This is our chance to build a country for the many not the few and fit for the next generation."

There was a fear earlier in the day that Mr Johnson's general election bid could have been derailed by amendments by MPs for votes for 16 and 17 year-olds and EU nationals, but these were not selected at committee stage, allowing the government to breathe a sigh of relief.

Bristol North West MP Darren Jones - Aye

Bristol South MP Karin Smyth - Aye

Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy - Aye

Earlier Downing Street indicated it would pull the bill if it amendments to expand the franchise had been accepted. It argued that this would have led to a six-month delay to the election.
