Boris Johnson's Brexit joke in victory speech has people unsure whether to 'laugh or cry'

People across the country are waking up to the news this morning that Boris Johnson will remain Prime Minister for another five years.

The Conservative Party won the election with a stunning majority and as such Johnson gave a triumphant speech to celebrate the victory.

During his speech, he boasted "we did it" and vowed that Brexit will be done by January 31, "no ifs, no buts".

The 55-year-old then wrapped things up with a joke, saying "Let's get Brexit done, but first, my friends, let's get breakfast done."

A number of people were amused by the quip, but there were plenty who were left unsure whether they should "laugh or cry" after hearing it.

In response to his words, one person on Twitter said: "I don't know whether to laugh or cry that this clown is still running the country."

Another wanted to remind the PM of all the people across the UK who "can't even afford breakfast".

A third was unimpressed with the whole thing, but agreed they'd need a "few Weetabix to get through the rest of this".

Someone else couldn't believe he'd actually said the words, asking if they'd just "hallucinated" it.

Despite some concern, others couldn't help but laugh at Johnson's joke.

"Great quote from Boris Johnson," proclaimed a different Twitter user.

A second even went as far as to brand him "hero" for making the remark, while another called him a "lad".

"Let's get Brexit done but first let's get breakfast done, hahahahaha go on Boris lad," they tweeted.

"Classic Boris," added a fourth.

The joke reminded others of the amusing moment back in 2016 when John McDonnell mixed up the words Brexit and breakfast, not once, but three times.

Former Welsh Conservative Party leader Andrew RT Davies also did the same thing during a speech at a Tory party conference in 2016.

He meant to say: "We WILL make Brexit a success!"

But instead he was heard proclaiming: "We WILL make breakfast a success!"

Davies has since tweeted about Johnson's joke, poking fun at his own slip up.

He said: "We're going to make a success of both this morning. And what a morning it is!"
