Boris Johnson refuses to quit as he wants to focus on 'issues facing country'

Boris Johnson has refused to step down following a meeting with a number of his Cabinet colleagues earlier tonight.

The Prime Minister was greeted by a handful of Cabinet ministers in No 10 Downing Street following his return from an appearance at the Liaison Committee in parliament.

It has been reported that Johnson hit back saying he is going to focus on the "hugely important issues facing the country''.

Home Secretary Priti Patel, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis and Welsh Secretary Simon Hart were among the Cabinet ministers telling Johnson to stand down.

Patel is also believed to have spoken to the Prime Minister to convey the "overwhelming view" of the parliamentary party.

Reports even suggested Nadhim Zahawi, who was only appointed Chancellor late last night, was among those taking part in the showdown with Johnson.

Allies including Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries and Brexit Opportunities Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg all remained supportive of the Prime Minister.

While, Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab also remained loyal to Johnson and defended him at a session of the backbench 1922 Committee.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee, also visited Downing Street to communicate the views of backbenchers, following the meeting in Parliament dominated by MPs calling for Johnson to go.

Throughout the course of the day 38 government employees resigned over the debacle.
