Boris Johnson promotes Michael Gove as he announces new cabinet

Michael Gove has been given a promotion in Boris Johnson's cabinet.

As part of a radical and ruthless change of cabinet Mr Gove has been made Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster - a role David Lidington held until he quit earlier on Wednesday.

Mr Lidington was former Prime Minister Theresa May's de facto deputy.

The role is seen as a promotion for Mr Gove as it administers the estates and rents of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Key responsibilities include:

  • advising the PM on developing and implementing government policy
  • driving forward government business and implementation including chairing and deputy-chairing Cabinet
  • committees and implementation taskforces
  • overseeing devolution consequences of EU exit
  • overseeing constitutional affairs and maintaining the integrity of the Union
  • oversight of all CO policies

The job is also being rumoured to include planning for a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Gove has been Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since 2017 while the MP for Surrey Heath has previously been Education Minister before becoming chief whip in 2014. Mr Gove has also been Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor.

In the referendum campaign he played a major part in the Vote Leave campaign along with Mr Johnson. Mr Gove was also Mr Johnson's campaign manager in his previous failed bid to become Prime Minister.

However on the day he was due to declare his bid Mr Gove withdrew his support. He was then eliminated from the voting rounds leading to Theresa May becoming Prime Minister.

Mrs May sacked him as Justice Secretary but he returned to cabinet in 2017 as Environment Secretary.

As part of the reshuffle, Dominic Raab has been given the foreign secretary job. That includes an additional title "First Secretary of State". It's being rumoured it could end up being Mr Raab deputising for Mr Johnson when required but Mr Gove retaining a senior role.
