Boris Johnson press conference expected to provide Liverpool update this evening

Boris Johnson will speak to the nation at a press conference later today.

It has just been announced that the Prime Minister will hold the press conference in Downing Street from 5pm today.

While it has not been confirmed what he will be speaking about it is expected that he will provide an update on Liverpool's mass covid-19 testing pilot.

It is understood that a senior member of the armed forces will appear alongside Mr Johnson to provide an update on how the mass testing operation is going in Liverpool.

The city-wide scheme, the first of its kind, was launched on Friday with thousands of military personnel setting up scores of new testing facilities across Liverpool.

The hope is that as many people in the city as possible get tested - including everyone who doesn't currently have symptoms.

The idea is to try and identify all those who are carrying the virus and urge them to self-isolate, thus cutting off the chains of transmission and preventing the further spread of the virus.

It is likely that the Prime Minister will thank the city and those involved in rolling out the scheme and may be able to present some early results from the first few days.

He may also speak about the promising news regarding vaccines.

It has just emerged that the first coronavirus vaccine can prevent more than 90% of people from getting covid-19.

The vaccine developers Pfizer and BionTech have hailed the breakthrough as a 'great day for science and humanity.'

The vaccine has been tested on 43,500 people in six countries and no safety concerns have been raised.

The two companies now plan to apply for emergency approval to use the vaccine by the end of the month.

The ECHO will broadcast Mr Johnson's press conference from 5pm on our Facebook page and will provide key updates on our website.
