Boris Johnson pictured 'hosting Christmas quiz from Number 10 in breach of Covid rules'

Boris Johnson has been accused of breaking coronavirus laws by taking part in a quiz in Downing Street.

London was under Tier 2 rules when the Christmas quiz is beleived to have taken place last year, which banned social mixing between households.

The Prime Minister was allegedly pictured on a screen as he read out questions for the quiz, The Mirror reports.

A source told the paper that many staff 'huddled by computers' as they took part, and drank alcohol.

Halfway through the quiz, the PM surprised staff by turning up on screen as quizmaster for one round which lasted between 10 and 15 minutes.

In the picture the Prime Minister can be seen with two members of his team, although they were not drinking.

Official guidance at the time stated: "You must not have a work Christmas lunch or party, where that is a primarily social activity and is not otherwise permitted by the rules in your tier."

Last week Downing Street claimed no parties had taken place at Number 10.

Mr Johnson said last week: “I can tell you guidelines were followed at all times. I’ve satisfied myself that the guidelines were followed at all times.”

A source claimed to the paper: "It was just part of the culture. The PM turned a blind eye. He seemed totally comfortable with gatherings."

It is understood that staff were invited to the quiz, which raised money for charity, a couple of weeks previously.

It was claimed that dozens of people had signed up to take part in the quiz online, but many staff decided to take part from No10 instead.

Questions in the quiz ranged from the history of Downing Street lyrics of Christmas tunes lyrics.

A source said of staff’s decision to do the quiz in Downing St: "Everybody decided it would be more fun. It would be difficult to take part in such a large virtual quiz from home.

"No work was discussed, it wasn’t a business event. Nobody was working that evening, it was purely a social event."

A source added: "Nobody ever questioned whether this was against the rules or if we shouldn’t be doing this.

"We all just went ahead and did it. At the time we didn’t even click that what we were doing was so severely wrong. I’ve realised now that it was actually pretty outrageous.

"We felt like we were working extremely hard and working a lot of hours. Looking back, I accept we shouldn’t have done that."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week ordered an inquiry after footage of his then spokesperson laughing about an alleged party was leaked.

A No10 spokesman said of the quiz: "This was a virtual quiz. Downing Street staff were often required to be in the office to work on the pandemic response so those who were in the office for work may have attended virtually from their desks.

"The Prime Minister briefly took part virtually in a quiz to thank staff for their hard work throughout the year."
