The Labour Party has accused Boris Johnson of breaching the ministerial code over a political attack he made on London mayor Sadiq Khan during a Covid-19 press conference on Monday.
As a result, deputy party leader Angela Rayner has written to the Cabinet Office secretary Simon Case demanding an investigation into the incident.
Mr Johnson claimed at the news event that Mr Khan was “blowing” Transport for London’s (TfL) finances through an “irresponsible” fares policy. His comments came during the pre-election purdah period – which places limits on government publicity around a vote – for the London mayoral election on 6 May.
Elsewhere, education secretary Gavin Williamson has been accused of failing to do his homework on pupils’ behaviour at school, after launching a discipline drive following a year of coronavirus lockdown he claimed had “inevitably” seen a decline in standards.
But headteachers have hit back, with one union saying they had reported “a sense of calm and co-operation from students that is deeply impressive”.
