Caution to the wind
Boris Johnson’s personal irresponsibility and fading confidence in today’s big bang are a deadly combination as he is caught trying to dodge the isolation rules he imposes on the rest of us while begging us not to enjoy the freedoms he promised.
A furious backlash forced the Prime Minister and his Chancellor Rishi Sunak to follow the quarantine rules like everyone else – but in first seeking to avoid them, while ending the legal requirement to wear masks, he proved himself out of touch with public opinion.
Throughout the pandemic his “tough choices” have proved tough mostly for other people as he lurched from calamity to catastrophe, calling it wrong at nearly every step.
Jabs are weakening the link between infections and serious illness or death, but throwing caution to the wind is madness when sickness could still overwhelm the NHS and require fresh restrictions in the coming months.
If it all goes wrong, Johnson must be held accountable.
