Boris Johnson messages show 'loss of confidence' in Matt Hancock, says Susanna Reid

Good Morning Britain had their say on the apparent leaking of messages from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to his former chief aide Dominic Cummings on Thursday.

Cummings released the WhatsApp messages he claimed to be from the Prime Minister this week, where the PM reportedly said the Health Secretary should be replaced by Michael Gove.

Hancock was described as "totally f***ing hopeless" in one message, while they featured discussions over ventilators, PPE and NHS staff testing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Host Susanna Reid said the particular messages suggest Johnson had suffered a loss in confidence of the Health Secretary during the first wave.

This led to co-host Adil Ray questioning if this was the case and the messages were genuine, how Hancock remained in the role as he still does now.

Speaking to guests former MP Jeffrey Archer and former political adviser Ayesha Hazarika, Susanna asked for their thoughts on the latest government scandal.

She told them: "I cannot let you go without discussing the release of the WhatsApp messages.

"Dominic Cummings finally providing the evidence of Boris Johnson and how he described Matt Hancock, which we can’t broadcast at 6:53 in the morning... Jeffrey?"

Jeffrey replied: "I have had the privilege of serving two Prime Ministers and Ayesha has had the privilege of serving two Prime Ministers.

"You think we couldn’t get headlines on this programme for the rest of the day or the rest of the week, or month if we said everything we knew they'd said? Of course we would."

Susanna then added: "But in the middle of a pandemic…if the Prime Minister is describing his Health Secretary in terms like that, it does rather suggest he’d lost confidence in the person who was supposed to be…"

She was then interrupted, as Jeffrey repeated of Boris: "He should have remained silent. He should have remained silent."

He then shouted at Susanna and Adil: "You think you two haven't had a row on this programme occasionally?"

Adil then quipped, referencing ex-host Piers Morgan: "Actually we haven’t, I think you're confusing me with a former presenter..."

He went on: "The point we're making is if he thinks one of his leading men or women is completely, utterly useless, and that person happens to be in charge of all of our health in the middle of a pandemic, why is he still in a job?"

Jeffrey Archer had his say (ITV)

Jeffrey said: "I'm bound to say you clearly haven’t noticed that all the opinion polls are saying 60-70 percent do not agree with Mr Cummings, and I disagree with you totally.

"I think Mr Hancock has done a damn good job."

In one WhatsApp message, dated March 27 last year, Mr Cummings complains the government has been turning down ventilator offers because the "price has been marked up" - to which the PM replies: "It's Hancock. He has been hopeless."

Less than an hour later, Mr Cummings complains about Matt Hancock and the lack of testing for NHS staff to which the PM replies: "Totally f***ing hopeless".

A month later on April 27, the Prime Minister admits "on PPE it's a disaster" and adds: "I can't think of anything except taking Hancock off and putting Gove on".

Mr Cummings chose to publish the carefully-selected texts on his newsletter after ignoring pleas from a Commons committee to send evidence formally to them.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
