Boris Johnson makes wildly false claim that rough sleeping is at an 8-year low

Boris Johnson has made a factually inaccurate claim that rough sleeping is at an eight-year low.

The Prime Minister said the "scourge" of street sleeping was "lower than any time in the last eight years".

But his comment, during a self-promoted 'People's PMQs' from Downing Street, is not correct.

Rough sleeping in England has risen by 165% since the Tories came to power, from 1,768 in 2010 to 4,677 in 2018.

The Prime Minister said: "There is one good bit of news, one floating glimmer of good news - which is the number of rough sleepers has come down a bit over, on the figures of the last eight years.

"It's lower than any time in the last eight years.

"But we've got to do far far better."

Mr Johnson appeared to get it right at first, when he said rough sleeping had "come down a bit". It did indeed fall from 2017 to 2018 - by 74 or 2%.

But he was not correct to say that it is "lower than any time in the last eight years". was it came down for the first time in eight years.

During his answer Mr Johnson admitted homelessness is "a scourge and a disgrace" with "too many" on the streets.

He also praised the 'no second night out' scheme that operated in London when he was mayor, saying it was vital to catch people early before life on the streets becomes a routine and a trap.

As well as rough sleepers, 127,370 kids are in temporary accommodation - a 13 year high and up 75% since 2010.

Overall 68,170 households that are homeless or facing homelessness in England, a rise of 11% in a year.

These figures are counted differently to rough sleepers, who are taken only as a snapshot on a single night out.

The Tories have introduced a Homelessness Reduction Act and a Rough Sleeping Strategy, vowing to eliminate rough sleeping altogether by 2024.
