Boris Johnson makes OJ Simpson glove reference at vaccine centre

Boris Johnson faced criticism over a remark referring to the OJ Simpson trial while visiting a vaccination centre.

The Prime Minister made the joke, which many are saying was "distasteful" when visiting Cwmbran vaccination centre earlier today.

A microphone picked up Mr Johnson joking that he was "like OJ Simpson" as he struggled to put on a latex glove.

The remark referred to the 1995 murder trial of actor and former NFL star Simpson, who was acquitted of the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

He struggled to put a glove found at the scene on his hand in court as part of his defence.

In the closing arguments his lawyer Johnnie Cochran said "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."

People took to Twitter to comment following the Prime Minister's remark.

Jonny said: "Really? Might be a funny one for the "lads" but a horrifying murder is not something that a Prime Minister should be joking about."

Catherine said: "Not sure when I put on a pair of surgical gloves, I think about It being like OJ Simpson! You gotta wonder why that sprung into his mind? Nor appropriate for a PM at work, with people he doesn’t know."

Sonia said: "Boris Johnson actually said 'like OJ Simpson' as he struggled to put on latex gloves, and no, I don't believe that's something that is commonly said (as someone just said to me). Is it? Do people really joke about the murder of two people? I've never heard it before. Horrendous."

Not everybody was outraged, with some saying it should be seen simply as a joke.

Among them was Sam, who said: "Say what you want about Boris Johnson and his handling of the pandemic as a whole, but that OJ Simpson reference was pretty funny."
