Boris Johnson lists just some of the problems with his Brexit deal in lengthy moan to MPs

Boris Johnson has helpfully outlined just some of the problems in his Brexit deal in Northern Ireland in a lengthy moan to MPs.

The Prime Minister, sounding for all the world as if the idea of the Northern Ireland border being a complicated thing had only just occurred to him, outlined a string of difficulties faced by people in the region since his "oven ready deal" came into force.

Speaking to a committee of MPs, he said: "You've got a very difficult situation in which vital drugs have not been able to be moved from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. 30 drugs including cancer drugs.

"I think about 200 companies have stopped shipping stuff. There's been impediments to the movement of guide dogs, of parcels, of potted plants, of tractor parts.

"And I think I'm right in saying that Asda don't actually have Asda shops in the Republic of Ireland, yet as the goods that are coming into Northern Ireland have all to be checked."

He went on to describe Jewish people leaving Northern Ireland because they were struggling to source kosher food as an "exodus."

The word exodus comes from the second book of the Old Testament and Torah, in which the Israelites, led by Moses, escape from hundreds of years of slavery in Egypt.

Mr Johnson said: "Only yesterday there were very serious representations from the Jewish community in Northern Ireland who pointed out that because of the problem with the food sector it was becoming difficult for them to have timely access or any access to kosher food.

"And they're talking about an exodus from Northern Ireland by the Jewish community."

The PM added: "Now clearly we'd do everything we can to avoid that, and to sort it out, but it's going to take our friends in the Joint Committee to make some movement."

But Mr Johnson insisted his Brexit deal said the does not pose any threat to Northern Ireland's position in the UK.

He said the Northern Ireland Protocol in the agreement required both sides to use their "best endeavours" to ensure there is free trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

He said it was "unfortunate" that the provisions of the Protocol were being applied in a way which was leading to "anxieties" in some communities.

"There is absolutely no threat to Northern Ireland's place within the United Kingdom and there should not be from the Protocol," he said.

"It is clear that Northern Ireland is part of the sovereign territory of the United Kingdom. That is all clear from the Protocol."

But he insisted the EU is implementing the Northern Ireland Protocol in a "grossly disproportionate and unnecessary" fashion.

Giving evidence to the Commons Liaison Committee, the Prime Minister said the issue over the movement of chilled meats from Great Britain was still "far from fixed".

He said there had only been a "stay of execution", leading to concerns in Northern Ireland's Jewish community that they will be unable to access kosher foods.

"They are talking now about an exodus from Northern Ireland. We want to do everything that we can to avoid that," he said.

Mr Johnson said the UK had agreed to checks on goods moving from Great Britain out of "neighbourliness" as part of the arrangements to ensure there was no return of a hard border with the Republic.

"We also agreed unfortunately that the EU could have a say in how this was done," he said.

"I think what we all need to do is work rapidly on some solutions, fix this thing fast. I think it will take some effort but we really can't exclude any actions that the UK Government my need to take to protect what it says in the Protocol."
