Boris Johnson leads Tory leadership race after first round of voting

Boris Johnson stormed through the first round of voting today in the Conservative party leadership contest.

Johnson took 114 votes of the 313 cast, nearly triple that of the second place candidate Jeremy Hunt who had 43 votes.

Andrea Leadsom, Esther McVey, and Mark Harper are all out of the process following today's vote as none of them managed to garner the requisite 5% vote share needed to continue.

The 10 candidates as of this morning (PA)

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove came in third place with 37 votes, followed by Dominic Raab with 27.

Sajid Javid rounded out the top five with 23 votes.

Social media favourite Rory Stewart narrowly avoided elimination, receiving 19 votes - enough to get him to the second round of voting June 18.

The remaining seven candidates will go through to a debate on Channel 4 this Sunday, before the second ballot two days later.

If there are more than two candidates remaining after a second round of voting there wil be a third round on June 19, followed by fourth and fifth ballots if needed on June 20.

The first hustings events for the final two candidates will be on June 22, with the final result expected a month later on July 22.
