Boris Johnson issues coronavirus update ahead of Nottingham Forest v Sheffield Wednesday

The UK government is considering banning sporting events, such as football matches, to combat the spread of coronavirus - but that will not happen immediately.

As it stands, Nottingham Forest are due to make the trip to face Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, days after owner Evangelos Marinakis announced he had contracted COVID-19.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a press conference on Thursday afternoon that banning "major public events, like sporting fixtures" is being considered.

On Thursday, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK rose to 596, but the government’s chief scientific adviser has warned the actual number could be between 5,000 to 10,000.

“We are considering banning major public events like sporting fixtures,” Johnson said.

“The scientific advice is this has little effect on the spread – but it does place a burden on other public services.”

He added: “We’re discussing these issues with colleagues in all parts of the UK.”

Earlier this week, Arsenal's Premier League clash with Manchester City was postponed.

Marinakis had been at the Gunners’ Emirates Stadium on February 27 for a Europa League tie with Olympiacos - the Greek club which he also owns - and had met Arsenal staff and players.

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed three members of his squad have been isolated after showing signs of coronavirus, while reports stated that Chelsea cancelled training on Thursday due to fears.

In Europe, coronavirus has already led to Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s La Liga being suspended, while each of the continent’s top-five leagues, excluding the Premier League, has seen matches played behind closed doors.
