Boris Johnson is planning to get a Downing Street dog to join Larry the cat

Boris Johnson plans to get a Downing Street dog, the Mirror understands.

The Tory leader today told Number 10 staff he will get a Prime Ministerial pooch to keep him company.

And in his first act of diplomacy as PM, he “declared peace” in the war between Larry, the Number 10 cat and Foreign Office mouser Palmerston.

The feline rivals have repeatedly faced off on the steps of Downing Street in a bitter turf war.

Both Whitehall moggies were rescued from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Larry, who was brought in by David Cameron in 2011, has become a regular fixture on the street, often seen lazing in the sunshine on the grassy verges.

But relative newcomer Palmerston, who arrived in 2016, has proved himself to be the more aggressive of the pair, and a much more efficient mouse catcher.
