Boris Johnson is new prime minister after defeating Jeremy Hunt in Tory leadership contest

Boris Johnson will be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom after winning the Conservative Party leadership contest.

The former Foreign Secretary will become the 77th when incumbent Theresa May resigns tomorrow afternoon after Prime Minster's Questions.

Eton educated Johnson defeated Jeremy Hunt by winning the most votes among the 160,000 Tory party members.

He received 92,153 votes while Hunt got 46,656.

May will visit the Queen to tender her resignation, then it will be the turn of Johnson to make his way to Buckingham Palace where he will take charge shortly after.

Tory members have been voting for the last two-and-a-half weeks. It's the first time they have selected a serving prime minister.

As soon as Johnson,55, enters office he will have to pick his new cabinet as he decides the Brexit path he wants to go down.

Prior to the announcement a number of Cabinet ministers resigned saying they couldn't serve in a Boris Johnson government.

Johnson, who was born in New York, has said he is determined to take the UK out of the EU on October 31 if a deal is struck or not.

The European Union has said on a number of occasions the present withdrawal agreement is not up for renogotiation.

The MPs, including some Conservatives, said they will do all they can to stop no deal if the next PM tries to take that route.

Johnson's government has a wafer thin majority of just two in the House of Commons, that's if the Democratic Unionist Party stay on side.
