Boris Johnson is holding a press conference with Sir Patrick Vallance and Professor Chris Whitty on Wednesday

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson will appear in a televised press conference about coronavirus on Wednesday.

It is understood that he will be appearing alongside the chief medial officer Professor Chris Whitty as well as chief scientific officer Sir Patrick Vallance.

The Downing Street press conferences were a daily fixture in the early part of the press conferences with a UK Government minister usually flanked by two scientific or medical experts.

However as the virus cases started to fall the UK Government moved to only doing the press conferences occasionally. Fewer scientists have also featured on these press conference in recent months.

It is understood that the press conference on Wednesday will not be to announce new policy or lockdown changes but to provide an update on the Covid statistics.

Only a week ago Professor Whitty as well as chief scientific officer Sir Patrick appeared on a broadcast without the opportunity for journalists to question them about the direction of travel the UK was on in terms of cases.

Sir Patrick said that if the doubling time stayed at seven days, there would be 50,000 cases a day by the middle of October, and around 200 plus deaths a day by the middle of November.

“This graph shows how quickly this can move,” he said. “We need speed, reaction and enough to bring that figure down.”
