Boris Johnson is asked whether Covid rules will be lifted

Boris Johnson said there was still a need to be “careful” about Covid when asked whether Cabinet supported the easing of England’s Plan B measures.

He told reporters: “We have got to continue to remember that it’s a threat, don’t forget there are still 16,000 people in hospital because of Covid.

“If you don’t get vaccinated you are eight times more likely to end up in hospital, 90% of people in intensive care are people who have not been boosted.

“We need to make sure that people learn that lesson and get boosted now.”

The Prime Minister, whose leadership is under intense pressure over allegations around lockdown-busting parties in No 10, said during a visit to Finchley Memorial Hospital in north London: “I am focused on delivering for the people of this country, getting us through Covid.

“We’ve had the fastest booster rollout of any European country, we have got the most open economy – that’s because of the hard work of everybody in government, the amazing work of the NHS, all the doctors and nurses up and down the country, and that’s who I’m here to support and thank.”
