Boris Johnson is asked to allow more people to attend weddings

Boris Johnson has rebuffed a proposal to allow more people to attend weddings during the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the UK lockdown was announced in March, many couples have had to cancel or postpone their big day.

But as part of a series of major changes to the strict measures in England in July, nuptials were again able to go ahead from but with strict limits.

Weddings and civil partnerships are now allowed to take place, but you should only invite close friends and family, up to a maximum of 30 people.

And the new rule of six, introduced earlier this week, sees weddings as an exception meaning wedding ceremonies, civil partnerships and receptions can still have gatherings of up to 30 in COVID-19 Secure venues.

However, the Prime Minister rebuffed demands to make immediate changes to coronavirus restrictions to allow more people to attend weddings.

Conservative Gagan Mohindra (South West Hertfordshire) asked Mr Johnson during PMQs on Wednesday: "Would the Prime Minister consider changing the number of attendees from a blanket limit of 30 to a fairer system, which allows venues to hold a percentage – say 50% – of their usual licensed activity?

"This would enable many venues to bounce back and keep on their furloughed staff."

Mr Johnson replied: "The trouble is that in all these things there is an increase in the risk involved, an increase in the risk of contagion and we simply have to balance that risk with what we’re seeing now in the spread of the virus.

"So I must reluctantly say to (Mr Mohindra) that we will work as fast as possible to get our whole economy open, to take all these restrictions off."

Mr Johnson said the best way to achieve this is for the country to work together, "as they have done" he adds, to enforce social distancing, obey the rules, and take a test if they have symptoms.
