Boris Johnson in hospital overnight as he battles coronavirus

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has spent the night in hospital due to persistent coronavirus symptoms 10 days after he was diagnosed with the virus.

Mr Johnson, 55, was admitted to an NHS hospital in London last night and will stay for "as long as needed".

Downing Street confirmed he was taken to hospital as a "precautionary measure" on the advice of his doctor.

Last night, a Number 10 spokeswoman said: "On the advice of his doctor, the Prime Minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests.

"This is a precautionary step, as the Prime Minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus 10 days after testing positive for the virus.

"The Prime Minister thanks NHS staff for all of their incredible hard work and urges the public to continue to follow the Government's advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives."

Mr Johnson is expected to remain in charge of the Government.

However, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is expected to chair the daily COVID-19 meeting this morning in Mr Johnson's place.

It was confirmed on March 27 that the Prime Minister had tested positive for coronavirus and he had been self-isolating in Downing Street.

The news of Mr Johnson's hospital admittance came just an hour after the Queen delivered a broadcast to the nation, saying "we will overcome it" but "may have more still to endure".

Yesterday, the UK Government's The Department of Health said the number of people hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus to have died had risen by 621 to 4,934 as of 5pm on Saturday, up from 4,313 the day before.
