Boris Johnson 'in good spirits' despite ongoing coronavirus fever and isolation

Boris Johnson is “in good spirits” despite his extended coronavirus self-isolation, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

The Prime Minister, 55, was said to have been “hit like a sledgehammer” by the virus.

Experts warn that a patient suffering a temperature for eight days could be at risk of pneumonia. His pregnant fiancee Carrie Symonds, 32, has also been laid up with symptoms.

She tweeted: “I've spent the past week in bed with the main symptoms of Coronavirus. I haven’t needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I’m on the mend.”

A source told the Mail on Sunday the PM has “been coughing and spluttering his way through conference calls”.

Mr Hancock said: “He's OK I've been talking to him everyday, several times a day…he's very much got his hand on the tiller. But he's still got a temperature.

He added: "He's working away inside Downing Street. He's in good spirits.”

Mr Hancock, who fell ill at the same time as the PM, has been back at work for several days holding press conferences and appearing on the media.

He said "I was lucky I had two pretty bad days and then I bounced back".

Asked if Mr Johnson had been visited by a doctor, Mr Hancock replied: "I don't know and, even if I did, I wouldn't go into details in public."

Mr Hancock said the PM had been in "good spirits" throughout his time in self -isolation.
