Boris Johnson in car crash after protester runs towards PM's convoy outside Parliament

The Prime Minister was involved in a car crash this afternoon after a protester ran towards his convoy outside the gates of Parliament.

A protester stepped into the road outside the Palace of Westminster when Boris Johnson’s convoy left after Prime Minister’s Questions.

The Met Police said a man has been arrested and there were no injuries.

The lead car was forced to stop, with an escorting vehicle, a Range Rover, running into the back of Mr Johnson's silver Jaguar.

The vehicles then drove off, with a dent visible in the back of the PM's vehicle

Downing Street said there were no reports of any injuries.

The man who ran out in front of the car had been demonstrating about Turkey's operation against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that two police vehicles were involved in a collision in Parliament Square.

The spokesman said: “The police vehicles were part of a security movement.

“A pedestrian is reported to have stepped onto the road, causing the vehicles to suddenly stop, which has led to two of the vehicles in the convoy being involved in a damage-only collision.

“No injuries have been reported.

“A man, no further details at this time, was arrested at the scene for offences under Section 5 of the Public Order Act and for obstructing the highway.

“All vehicles were able to drive from the scene.”

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden told the daily Downing Street coronavirus press conference that the Prime Minister was "wholly unscathed and I believe everyone else escaped safely from that situation".
