Boris Johnson’s monumental self-interest has led him to 10 Downing Street.
The nation’s 77th Prime Minister has not found himself at the pinnacle of the UK Government because he is pursuing strongly-held political beliefs.
He only became a Brexiteer – and has in turn caused untold harm to the country for years to come – because he thought it would be a good career move.
Somehow, he has been proved right – he now has the job he always wanted.
But nothing this Trump-lite Prime Minister says can be taken at face value.
Every calculated deed and utterance is the product of fierce, manipulating self-interest.
His performance at the dispatch box yesterday was greeted with howls of delight from Tory backbenchers.
Mainly, because they can feel Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party breathing down their necks and they think Johnson can save them.
But, just as we expected, the bombast was low on substance and he misled from the start.
He trashed Theresa May’s flawed Brexit Withdrawl Agreement but, in typical Johnsonian style, failed to mention he actually voted for the deal.
Expect more of the same in the coming months from a man who will say and do anything to advance his personal agenda.
We can only hope the damage he will inevitably cause is not irreversible.
Help our children
We can no longer disregard the mental health crisis gripping Scotland’s young people.
This month, it emerged suicide rates among teenagers have almost doubled in eight years and week in, week out, we continue to report on the the tragedies of yet more young lives being lost.
Brexit has been eclipsing some of our country’s most pressing issues for too long, including tackling youth suicides.
A Scottish Government report this month called for “transformational change” to mental health services for young people.
Barnardo’s Scotland said it was set up to respond to “a range of challenges” facing children accessing mental health support in this country.
Now is the time to address those challenges head on, turn the tide on these horrifying statistics and keep more families together.
It’s a Scotcher
Scots of all shapes, ages and sizes sizzled in glorious sunshine yesterday.
Our beaches were packed with smiling families and ice cream shops did a roaring trade on the hottest day of the year.
Sadly, it’s not set to continue – brollies out tomorrow, folks.
