Boris Johnson has called out veganism as a 'crime against cheese lovers'

Boris Johnson gave his first in depth interview of 2020 to BBC Breakfast this morning, and was met with questions around Brexit, Russian interference, the NHS, the royals and even veganism.

During the 30-minute conversation with Dan Walker, he declined to comment on many issues, but spoke candidly at his failed attempt to go vegan.

He previously claimed to have adopted the diet while on the campaign trail to become the conservative leader.

During the interview, the Prime Minister said he hopes to shed some weight in the next year, but that it wouldn't happen by ditching animal products.

Admitting he's not participating in Veganuary, he said: "I had thought of it, but it requires so much concentration.

"I take my hat off to vegans who can handle it and who manage to avoid all non-vegan products, but I haven't got it.

"I mean you can't eat cheese, can you? You can't eat cheese if you're vegan."

He added: "It's just a crime against...cheese lovers."

Viewers immediately took to social media to poke fun at the Prime Minister.

One person tweeted: "Boris Johnson currently asking if vegans can eat cheese on BBC News...I'll leave that there."

Another added: "Boris Johnson can’t go vegan because it ‘requires too much concentration’ ... but running the country doesn't?"

Others found it easy to relate to the prime minister on the subject.

One person joked: "Boris Johnson not being a Vegan because he likes cheese too much is the only relatable thing about him."
