Boris Johnson has been taken to intensive care

Number 10 has announced that Boris Johnson has been taken into intensive care after being hospitalised with coronavirus symptoms.

A spokesman said: “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.”

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will be taking charge temporarily while the PM is in hospital.

"The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all the NHS staff for their hard work and dedication", the statement concluded.

Mr Johnson was admitted to St Thomas' hospital in London on Sunday, a moved described as a precaution at the time. This afternoon (Monday) it was confirmed he would stay another night in hospital.

It is understood the PM was moved to intensive care at 7pm.

A government spokesperson claimed that Mr Johnson was conscious and was only being taken to the ICU as a precaution'.
