Boris Johnson green lights English fan return as Scottish football watches on

Football fans in England will be allowed to return to stadiums in limited numbers from December 2.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce plans for up to 4000 supporters to attend matches in areas with low Covid-19 prevalence.

It's expected football's place in England's tier system following the nation's circuit breaker lockdown will be clarified today.

In Tier 2 areas, up to 2000 fans will be allowed to attend and a maximum of 4000 in Tier 1.

The changes do not cover Scottish football grounds, with rules already in place under the current tier framework.

Sport is a devolved issue and any decision over the long-term return of fans to grounds will be made in Holyrood.

But the issue has been placed on the backburner for much of the country in recent weeks amid tightened regional measures.

Eleven local authorities have been placed under the toughest Level 4 coronavirus restrictions until December 11.

Some areas, such as Inverness, are in Tier 1 and Caledonian Thistle were permitted 300 fans at the weekend.

Clubs such as Aberdeen and Ross County have held successful test events but the Dons, in particular, have been vocal in requesting talks with the Government over keeping stadium gates open.
