Boris Johnson girlfriend pictures and other political PR photo disasters

Gazing longingly into each other’s eyes, these pictures appear to show Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds’ love is as strong as ever, despite their furious bust-up.

But the couple have been accused of staging the shots in a cynical bid to debunk rumours their relationship is on the rocks, as he tries to repair the damage the row may have done to his Tory leadership chances.

It's not the first time a political photo opportunity has turned PR disaster. Here are five other occasions:

(David Mellor and family)

David Mellor

In 1992, Tory Heritage Minister David Mellor tried in vain to salvage his career after lurid details emerged of his affair with Antonia de Sancha, an actress 12 years his junior.

Mellor tried to smooth things over by arranging a bizarre photo op at his five-bar garden gate with his entire family.

(Jeremy Thorpe with wife and son)

Jeremy Thorpe

Former Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe frequently invited photographers into his home to capture private moments with both of his wives during the 1960s and 70s.

All of this meant few people learned of Thorpe’s string of gay lovers at a time when homosexuality was still illegal in Britain.

Simon Danczuk

In 2015, Labour MP Simon Danczuk arranged to be photographed out on the town with his ex-wife Karen. What made it unusual was that his girlfriend Claire Hamilton was there, too.

The pics appeared to show there was no acrimony between the two women. Ms Hamilton broke up with him the next month.

(Jeffrey Archer with wife Mary)

Jeffrey Archer

In 1986, Jeffrey Archer was photographed placing a comforting arm around wife Mary.

The former MP and novelist had been forced to resign as chair of the Tory Party after being accused of making a pay-off to a prostitute, leaving his political career in tatters.

In 2001, he was imprisoned for perjury.

Keith Vaz

Keith Vaz and wife Maria were pictured on the doorstep of their home in 2016, after the Sunday Mirror revealed he visited rent boys.

Mrs Vaz said the Labour MP had begged for forgiveness and she warned him to change or “I’ll sling him out”. She said: “I would have liked to have taken my crockery and broken it on his head.”
