Boris Johnson edges towards backing Theresa May's Brexit deal

Boris Johnson has edged towards backing Theresa May's deal after warning there is now an "appreciable risk that we will not leave at all".

The former foreign secretary accused the Prime Minister of "cravenly handing the helm" to backbench MPs, as Parliament gears up to cast a series of votes on different Brexit options.

It comes after the chief of the European Reform Group Jacob Rees-Mogg suggested he could vote for the Prime Minister's deal over fears that Remainers in parliament could stop Brexit from happening.

Speaking at an event for Telegraph subscribers, Mr Johnson said he's not going to vote for the deal "yet".

But he said he wants to hear "clearly that there will be a Canada-style deal, that there will not be regulatory alignment".

And he added that "in the ideal world you would have had a Leaver Prime Minister".

The former London Mayor's long-held ambitions to lead the Tory Party are no secret.

Addressing the largely Leave-backing audience, Mr Johnson repeated his calls for Mrs May to take the UK out of the EU without a deal.

He said: "We are now faced with an even wider range of destinations – second referendum, general election, longer extension or the Boles/Letwin model.

"None of which correspond remotely to what the people voted for. None of which delivers Brexit.

"We can either vote for this appalling deal and get a kind of pseudo Brexit over the line, or we can run the risk of further delay, confusion and parliamentary jiggery pokery."
