Boris Johnson "deletes" embarrassing tweet saying he voted in local election

Former London mayor Boris Johnson was at the centre of another Twitter storm after claims he deleted a tweet saying he'd just voted Conservative in the local elections - despite no elections being held in London.

Comedy writer James Felton retweeted the deleted message which had appeared on the Politwoops website which stores all deleted tweets from politicians.

The message, which apparently stayed up for just 30 seconds before being deleted, said: "I just voted Conservative in the local elections. Make sure you do too! You’ve got two hours left to get out and vote!"

According to the site Boris erased it just two hours before voting ended at 10pm on Thursday, the Mirror reports.

Twitter users took little time to lambast the former Foreign Secretary with his rival Labour parliamentary candidate for Uxbridge and Hillingdon Ali Milani joking that Boris was "asking for 8 million friends."

Others suggested an intern had tweeted for him while others joked that fellow Tory MPs may have deliberately misled him.

However, some supporters said he may have been referring to having cast his vote in Oxfordshire where he lives rather than London.

It is far from the first time that Mr Johnson has made such a slip up.

His colourful language has frequently got him in trouble including saying Muslim women who wear burkas look like 'letter boxes', calling black people 'picanninies' and saying that former US President was 'part-Kenyan'.

Elections have taken place in 248 English councils outside London, and 11 local authority areas in Northern Ireland. However no polls are taking place in any London borough this year.
