Boris Johnson declares 'war' on coronavirus with new emergency 'C-19' committee

Boris Johnson told the cabinet coronavirus is a "war" which must be won today, as ministers scrambled to ease the impact of Covid-19 on businesses.

And he revealed a new 'ministerial structure' - with four new committees to deal with the fallout of the pandemic.

Chairing the weekly cabinet meeting this morning, the Prime Minister set out action being taken to support firms and workers through the outbreak.

He told his top team: "We are engaged in a war against the disease which we have to win."

The PM said the government must "rise to the challenge" of supporting businesses through "hugely challenging times" - and said more detail would be confirmed shortly.

The meeting followed the first Economic and Business Response committee, chaired by Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

According to Number 10, the committee agreed further action would be taken beyond what was set out in the budget as the situation develops.

Mr Johnson also announced new structures within government to coordinate the response to coronavirus.

Four new committees - focusing on health, public sector preparedness, economy and international response - will feed into a new daily meeting on the virus, which will be chaired by the PM.

The daily 'war cabinet' - to be known as 'C-19' - will be made up of Mr Johnson and the chairs of the four committees.

The Prime Minister will continue to chair regular Cobra meetings to take strategic decisions and review progress.

The Healthcare committee will be chaired by Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Michael Gove will chair the public sector committee, Chancellor Rishi Sunak the economic committee and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab the international committee.
