Boris Johnson Covid press conference confirmed for this afternoon

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will lead a Downing Street press conference this afternoon, it has been confirmed.

He will be joined by England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

Mr Johnson is expected to cover preparations for further easing of England's lockdown rules, which will see non-essential retail and beer gardens able to reopen in just a week's time.

But the press conference will also see other announcements on international travel, vaccine passports and free testing.

A number of cities across England will be trialling out vaccine passports for events - such as comedy nights and sporting events where large crowds of people are expected to attend.

The sporting events taking part in the trial include the Snooker World Championships in Sheffield, the FA Cup semi-final (Leicester v Southampton) in Wembley, three 10k runs in Hatfield Park, Hertfordshire and the Carabao Cup final (Manchester City v Tottenham) in Wembley.

The government has already said that foreign holidays will not be allowed until May 17, at the earliest.

It is reported that a 'traffic light' system may come into force, with red, amber and green ratings for countries.

For countries under the red and amber categories, it'd mean that travellers will have to quarantine or isolate once they return from their holiday.

People coming back from countries in the green category will not have to quarantine or isolate, but may be required to take Covid tests before departing and on returning back into the UK.

The Prime Minister is also expected to cover the restrictions that will be lifted in a week's time, on April 12.

The press conference will take place at 5pm.
